: Bo Bicknell

Field Director for Young Adult Program

Bo was born and raised in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. After receiving a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy and Political Science from the University of Vermont, he decided it was time to set out to explore and build a career. He has lived all over the country and brings more than a decade's worth of experience in the outdoor education field to True North.

Bo began his outdoor career at Camp Killooleet in central Vermont and has worked at a number of other summer camps as a high ropes facilitator, team building instructor, nature counselor, rock climbing specialist, caving guide, music teacher, and staff trainer. He has spent almost all of his summers completely outside – at camp, through-hiking Vermont's famous Long Trail, backpacking in Idaho, and exploring the Rocky Mountains.

In 2003, Bo spent 6 months in New Zealand working as a first mate and animal specialist on the Carino, a sailboat based out of the Bay of Islands. He facilitated clients swimming with wild dolphins, led hikes on deserted islands, and taught about the local pods of Orca whales. These travels across the world inspired him to return to the United States in an effort to get to know his own country. He eventually visited every state in the country, including a majestic road-trip through the Alaskan Rockies, which culminated in a swim in the Arctic Ocean.

Bo spent 6 years working for Nature's Classroom Inc. as a teacher, medical staff, and program director. He specialized in teaching natural sciences, leadership development, and primitive wilderness survival skills such as emergency shelter construction, matchless fire building, and animal stalking. With a desire to seek out new personal and professional challenges, he found his way back to Vermont as a guide at True North.

Today, as a Field Director, Bo works to inspire and train the guide teams to teach students to connect with the natural world and find metaphors for their own lives in the wilderness of the Green Mountains. In his spare time he plays bluegrass on the guitar and banjo, snowboards, runs, hikes, climbs rocks and trees, and loves to jump in cold rivers.
